Various styles of shading

The Running Horse

I hope you are pretty well-versed with the apple example because these are just improvisational methods for shading....the different types of shading that are possible... and it is better to see this only after you have mastered all the previous pages.

There are a lot of different techniques used... i think the most realistic of them is shading with paints, but nevertheless, all styles have their own charisma! Let me introduce you to a few styles I know, but don't use too often:

The quick sketch done usually by sketch pen :

This is usually done either by a pen or a sharp dark pencil. As the name suggests, it is really a 'quick sketch' and it is unique and artistic in it's own way. Only one shade that is dark grey has been used and nothing else.

The Pencil shaded horse:

This one is definitely not as quick as the previous one. In the horse below, different shades have been used and it looks more realistic than the previous one. For the different shades, as I have said before, different levels of pressure application on the lead of the pencil give rise to different shades on paper. So it is definitely not necessary to have 5 or 6 grey shades of pencil in hand to do this.... just one will do!

The dotted horse:

Sprays are used for dot shading... the dark regions have more concentration of dots and the light regions have lesser concentration. I used paintbrush for the horse below:

The painted horse:

As I said before, I feel that the shading by paints is the most smooth and most realistic...not necessarily the most artistic cuz different forms are special in their own way...but definitely the most realistic. I do not think there will be much doubt on the subject, as the horse below is 'real' indeed, if I do say so myself! For computer artists, I'd suggest adobe photoshop for paintings..

Definitely, the four forms above are not the only ones possible. There are so many different types of shading using so many different types of tools and well, it's just your duty to go out and develop your own forms !
