Shading

Page 1

Shading, I feel is the borderline between the 'people who are good at drawing' and the people who aren't. Cuz the people who can shade, are good( at drawing ), and the people who are good, can shade !And if you wanna come in that first category, I think you have already made the right start!

What is Shading?

duhhh....uhmmm...I can't give you a definition as I don't like definitions very much...but I can give you a graphical idea about it...

Look at this ball.... does it look real?

I'm sure it doesn't. It could very well be a circular piece of cardboard filled in blue, right? Cuz there's nothing in the picture that tells you that the drawing is a 3-dimensional one. It looks rather like a 2-dimensional planar circle.

What about this one?

What is the difference between these two? Well, what you understood from the two is nothing other than the concept of shading... the concept of making a 2-D image look 3-D... and if you can suggest a good enough definition for that, please email me as soon as possible! The ball in this example shows the curvature, the roundness and even the shiny surface of the ball, and all this just makes the image more real.

Thus to conclude this introduction, let me end by saying that...

I hate definitions!
